Relationship with Ex-Boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn

In 2012, Gypsy found herself back online after years of being kept away. She connected with Nicholas Godejohn through a Christian dating site, despite living 600 miles apart in different states. They spent two years getting to know each other through messages and Gypsy’s hidden Facebook profiles. As time went on, Gypsy decided to come clean to Nicholas about the truth behind her fabricated health issues. “I just couldn’t keep lying to him. So, I told him everything,” she revealed in the 2017 HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.

After a year of virtual connection, they arranged to meet for the first time in March 2015 at a movie theater in Missouri. They chose to see Cinderella together, hoping that Godejohn’s charm would impress Gypsy’s protective mother, Dee Dee, and reassure her about their unusual relationship.

However, the meeting did not go as planned. Dee Dee grew jealous of the attention Gypsy showed Nicholas, sparking heated arguments and weeks of tension. Frustrated and feeling trapped in her mother’s control, Gypsy and Nicholas began discussing drastic measures. They planned to rescue Gypsy from her abusive home life by putting an end to Dee Dee’s life. Gypsy even financed Nicholas’s journey from Wisconsin to Missouri, where they carried out their deadly plan.

This tragic tale of online romance turned deadly illustrates the complex and dark consequences of desperate circumstances and misplaced trust.

Dee Dee’s Murder:

On June 14, 2015, alarming posts on Dee Dee and Gypsy’s shared Facebook page, like “That b–– is dead!”, induced concerned neighbors and friends to call the police. Officials observed Dee Dee face down in her bedroom. She was stabbed 17 times inside the back and was dead for days. Initially, police feared for Gypsy, who they believed was frail and possibly harmed or abducted by the killer.

It was then that Gypsy’s neighbor and close friend Aleah Woodmansee decided to inform the police about Gypsy’s secret boyfriend online. Woodmansee had kept printouts of conversations Gypsy had shared, which helped the police identify and swiftly locate Godejohn. Less than two days later, the authorities apprehended both at Godejohn’s residence.

The truth that unfolded was even more startling and intricate. Not only could Gypsy walk unassisted, but she had also orchestrated her own mother’s murder to, as Gypsy described it, “escape” her manipulation and mistreatment. During police interviews, Gypsy appeared saddened by her mother’s death, but her actions immediately after the murder suggested otherwise.

After the killing, Gypsy and Godejohn engaged in sexual activity in her bedroom, then fled with $4,000, largely from Rod’s child support payments. They stayed at a motel close to Springfield for a few days, and security cameras recorded them shopping at a nearby Walmart. Gypsy, disguised with a blonde wig, walked independently as they boarded a Greyhound bus to Godejohn’s Wisconsin home, where they had sent the murder weapon. Believing they had evaded capture, video footage from their motel room showed them laughing and making lewd jokes.

Trial and Punishment:

After Dee Dee was killed, people felt sorry for Gypsy because she had been dealt badly by her mom for decades. In Missouri, a first-degree murder rate should have meant the death penalty or life in prison without a danger of getting out, however, prosecutor Dan Patterson decided no longer to invite for that because he thought this was a very uncommon case. Gypsy’s attorney was able to get the charge reduced to 2nd-degree homicide with the aid of showing scientific statistics that proved she had been abused. Gypsy became so malnourished that she gained 14 kilos she turned to the county jail, wherein most human beings commonly lose weight.
